Fossil-Fuel Free Future?

Why Critical Minerals Are Key to the Global Energy Transition

With the summer of 2023 recorded as the hottest ever, the urgency and imperative to shift the world’s

fossil-fuel driven energy infrastructure has never been clearer.

But how and what will it take to get us there?

Critical minerals are a group of minerals deemed strategically important both for their necessity in manufacturing

key renewable energy technologies and for their high risk of supply chain disruption.

Among these minerals are cobalt and nickel, both essential materials in electric vehicle (EV) batteries,
and thus necessary resources for achieving a global clean energy system and energy security.
In LEAD IMPACT’s first virtual panel event, Megan Araghi and Ben Rossman will engage in a
conversation about the current context and challenges presented by cobalt and nickel respectively, and
their implications for a global energy transition.
